If you’ve ever driven past the Arkansas Aeroplex on a military holiday and noticed a row of flags flying high along Flag Plaza, you already know what a sight it is. Flags of all 50 states and branches of the military, displayed in honor of Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Veterans’ Day and a handful of special occasions in between.
This year, the plaza looks a little different, and it’ll last a little longer in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
A Change Worth Celebrating
Starting this Fourth of July, the 50 state flags at Flag Plaza are being replaced with a full display of brand new American flags. The military branch flags will remain, as always, standing alongside them. But for the first time, every pole that once flew a state flag will instead carry the Stars and Stripes.
And unlike past years, when the flags come down after the holiday, these aren’t going anywhere. The American flags will fly through the end of the year — a deliberate decision to mark this moment in Mississippi County history.
A Thank-You Is in Order
Getting 50 brand new American flags is no small feat. Special thanks are due to State Representative Joey Carr and State Senator Dave Wallace, who worked to help collect the flags that will fly over Flag Plaza this season. Their support for this community and this moment has helped make it possible.
